A little over a week ago we hosted a welcome reception for the new families to Matthews Hall. It was an opportunity for those new to our community to share their early days, and I very much valued the feedback. One theme stood out to me that I think encapsulated the majority of the comments and, as it turned out, echoed my remarks to the group.
We are different, and our differences are seen and valued.
?We are structurally, culturally and pedagogically different from other schools in our area.
?Our commitment to community and relational learning allows us to focus intentionally on both achievement, in its many forms, and wellbeing. We are mission driven, and at the core of that mission are the students we work with and grow with each day.?
At our gathering, I shared a comment made by one of our of new students. It was perhaps the most striking thing I have heard this year from a new student and was shared with me by their teacher. The student remarked that they loved their new school because, “I can be myself here”. That – is a feeling of belonging. Those five words, experienced here at Matthews Hall, speak volumes about our trusted, balanced and safe learning experience.
With small classes, exceptional educators, a culture of belonging and a recognition that learning happens all around us, all the time, we combine academic excellence with citizenship development, leadership opportunities, and well-being during a child’s formative years. Our students, with time, develop their confidence, their voice, their compassion, and their courage to contribute. This, in turn, underpins the development of their resilience in a polymorphic world.
We do this not just through our curriculum – we have presence in their journey and we guide and coach as much as we teach and learn. Our community provides the foundation upon which the navigation of life’s ups and downs can happen. And, the ups and downs will happen. Happily, though, they will happen with us.
We remain committed to and proud of our differences for it is in those differences that our value is experienced.
