We are now two months into the school year and Halloween is upon us. To all that are heading out this evening to see the spooky decorations and collect treats, I wish you a safe and fun filled evening.
There is so much that goes on at our school, and I thought it would be nice to hear from some of our students across the grades about what it is in the first two months that they have found meaningful.
Earlier this week, when I began to ask some of the students about their year, I was not sure what to expect. Perhaps stories of successes and challenges in the classroom, or perhaps stories of friendships and growth moments. What I heard was a great deal of positivity regarding what is happening inside and outside of the classroom. The students I spoke with were chosen at random and encouraged to speak about challenges as much as what they were enjoying.
The stories shared with me were centred in friendship and belonging. Reflections included one new student who feels they have found some real friends where that was not the case in their previous school. Many spoke of belonging and the co-curricular offerings that spanned music, athletics and clubs. They also spoke of feeling supported by their teachers and that if they ever needed to speak with an adult for any reason, they knew with whom they could speak. One comment that struck me was the feeling of being supported and celebrated by peers when successful. To be supported by friends and classmates when making an effort is indeed a wonderful feeling.
There are times when everything may not be as they want. Perhaps they are struggling with a friend or continue to work hard to achieve that next level of success. As with us all, there are moments when things are more challenging. When those moments arise, it brings comfort to know you are in a caring place surrounded by peers and adults who are keen to help. Based on my learnings this week when speaking with these students, we are such a place.
