Being a new member of this thriving community has been a joyous experience. At any moment, I am filled with a mix of excitement, pause, and reflecting on opportunities for growth. I am grateful for this chance to forge new relationships, and to contribute to something as meaningful as Matthews Hall.
New environments can evoke a sense of vulnerability as one navigates unfamiliar dynamics, norms, and expectations. There is the confluence of respecting tradition, pursuing the common good with others, and recognizing the opportunities for change and growth. There is a period of observation, where time is taken to understand the community’s values, traditions, and unwritten rules, which is complimented by a willingness to share one’s own experiences and insights. This, in turn, enriches the collective knowledge and fosters a sense of belonging.
Within my first two days, a middle school student kindly let me know they were my boss, another student at recess discussed with me how squishy berries can be transported from the playground to their home without being squished, and I was able to spend time with many of our families at our welcome back coffee morning. At recess, when I asked a few students what they thought I should know, one responded, “Just enjoy it!” These are all wonderful reflections on how belonging occurs at Matthews Hall.
I was also struck this week by our Motto – I Must, I Can, I Will. So much conveyed in so few words is the power of this Motto. We can often feel clouded or unsure when seeking to belong. Our Motto provides clarity and confidence, the courage to participate in belonging, and that allows for us to progress. More on that later.
Ultimately, belonging is about balance. It involves respecting the established culture while also carving out new space. It’s a journey of discovery, not only of the community but also of oneself. Embracing this duality leads to a fuller understanding of both the community and one’s role within it, fostering a deeper sense of belonging and purpose.
It is clear to me, as we conclude our first week, that we create a welcoming environment and support it well, and we each have a place and belong.
